El ICTUS es una de las principales causas de discapacidad grave en adultos, afectando a un gran número de personas al año, sobretodo a mayores de 60 años.
Las causas se dan por la falta de irrigación sanguínea en el cerebro, provocada comúnmente por la rotura de un vaso sanguíneo o la obstrucción de una artería.
Según estudios, en el 80% de los casos puede evitarse simplemente siguiendo una serie de pautas como evitar el tabaco, mantener una rutina deportiva, vigilar los niveles de colesterol, controlar la presión arterial o extremar la precaución en caso de diabetes o fibrilación auricular.
Los tratamientos de fisioterapia deben realizarse y comenzar lo antes posible tras el ICTUS, ya que el objetivo es revertir las secuelas provocadas con la mayor rapidez posible.
